Mr. Travis Roy — “Triumph Over Tragedy”

Hear how his life changed in an instant on the hockey rink. Roy, an outstanding player from North Yarmouth High School in Maine, was looking forward to his collegiate hockey career when the unthinkable happened.

On October 20, 1995 – just eleven seconds into his first-ever shift for Boston University men's ice hockey team – a 20-year-old Roy slid head-first into the boards after University of North Dakota player Mitch Vig avoided Roy's check. The awkward impact with the boards resulted in Roy cracking his fourth and fifth vertebra and leaving him a quadriplegic.

Today, Travis travels the New England area as a motivational speaker. In 1997, he founded the Travis Roy Foundation that supports people with spinal cord injuries and research in spinal cord treatment. Travis has helped the Foundation raise over $4.5 million for its work.

His story will inspire us and help face our own challenges.
